2010 Wish List
First things first, a HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone! It is certainly amazing how 2009 zoomed so fast and At the start of 2009, people were already predicting a gloom-and-doom scenario. People thought last year was Armageddon and the end of the financial institutions. And people thought that the 1,800 level of the stock market is just a ceiling. Great!
But as Buffett has always put it, it is in times of great pessimism that opportunities are abundant. Indeed they are. Suddenly and without warning our market rallied with the rest of the world and despite trailing behind them, it nevertheless managed a very impressive 62% return last year. The chickens who were calling, “the sky is falling!” were never heard of again (or at least until another disaster comes along).
I’m well excited for 2010. The year of the tiger seems to be an auspicious one, at least for me. If opportunities were bountiful last year, I have high hopes this year. I believe the Lord plans to bless us all bountiful and this year is no exception! And thus, I came up with my own wish list for 2010 and how I’m going to achieve them.
Here they are:
1.) Get my first Google adsense check. The Wealth Warrior has been existing for seven months and I am still nowhere near in getting that adsense check other bloggers have been bragging about. Siphoning through all the literature about adsense is really time-consuming and so I will just contract a pro blogger to help me reach my goal.
2.) Be an MDRT qualifier. There goes a saying that no life underwriter has m
ade it until he becomes a member of the Million Dollar Round Table. I intend to be one this year. Internet marketing has been working quite well for me lately. I managed to close my single biggest premium through this method and has had quite several more successes. Should this keep up, it is not an insurmountable thing to accomplish (as what I have previously thought).
3.) Earn regularly from my four different skills namely: selling (financial services), writing (financial articles and blogging), musicianship (playing in weddings) and public speaking (teaching and seminars).
4.) Increase my portfolio by 100%. This is easy. Last year, with the exception of the last quarter, has been not so rosy for me. Since that was the case, I intend to make up for loss time and thus, my target. Hey, just being an MDRT can help me easily accomplish this wish!
5.) Venture into another investment (or two). I am currently thinking of fixed income or currencies. My assets are not really well-diversified. I practically have 90% in equity or equity-related funds. Despite knowing that it is wise not to put everything in one basket, I didn’t heed that advice. The thrill of earning exponentially is what drives me. Lesson learned though.
6.) Develop several websites and forums. I have a lot of ideas in mind right now to expand financial literacy in this country. Among them are: develop the first online forum dedicated to insurance, life, non-life and medical and an online financial calculator. Daunting, yes but I’m not deterred.
7.) Start funding my wedding budget. No, I’m not getting married this year or next or even in the near future. I don’t even have a girlfriend let alone a bride but nonetheless, I think it’s wise to start setting aside something for it. After all, I wouldn’t want to spend all my life savings into this once-in-a-lifetime occasion. Perhaps a Php200,000.00 initial fund would suffice.
8.) Create a travel fund. I dream of going back to Thailand, China and Singapore next year but pleasure needs money and so I need to set aside some more funds for this purpose and this purpose alone! Thank God for budget air fares. This wish may not be too far after all.
9.) Buy myself a new Toshiba Portege and a DSLR. First, my Toshiba Satellite is turning four years old this year and although it is still in perfect working condition (just slowing down because of the age), I like to replace it with another newer (and younger) notebook. Second, I fell in love with photography and despite having only a point-and-shoot camera, I’d say my shots are quite impressive.
10.) Be more charitable and magnanimous. Got to share the blessings, of course! Although I have been contributing to several charitable institutions like Greenpeace and World Vision on top of my offerings to the Lord, I feel I can still contribute more. Giving is such a great privilege that I need to grab opportunities that comes along.

Thanks so much for all your wonderful articles in this blog! Actually, since last year, I have been trying to come up with my own annual financial goals but it has been a hit and miss thing (with a lot of misses). For this year, top on my list is to create an emergency fund. I got into a couple of stupid scrapes at the turn of the year which needed money so I figured, I could do well with an emergency fund where I could get all “unexpected” cash-outs from here. I can’t find a better term to describe this. I think that would be my most important goal for this year. Aside from that,I want to set aside money for travel and a house or condo.

Don’t forget, GF fund, before wedding fund! LOL!
Seriously, looking back on my plans last year, I was able to meet my financial goals for 2009. I was able to build a wedding fund, pay off debts, etc. etc.
But wait, I forgot to create a fund after the wedding day! LOL! Really that short-sighted.
